On January 15th, 2016 Gavin took part in a Gait & Balance Study at USF. Gavin decided to do this on his own. We always make sure that he chooses to do this and it is not something we force him to do. We also explain why these studies and trials are so important. We let him know that he is doing his part to help find a cure. This is how he can help! We also make sure he knows that this helps so many other people, not just him!
We began our day at USF to see Dr.Z for Gavin's regular exam and sign all our consent forms. This takes on average, about an hour and a 1/2. Then we moved on to the Physical Therapy Building at USF. This is where we met up with Dr.Kim and his team. This room is filled with all kinds of crazy looking contraptions, exercise equipment, ect. All of these things are to help patients get better, find treatments, research, ect. It's quite amazing.
Gavin was a real trooper! He spent 3 1/2 hours doing everything from walking on a special mat, to playing on a machine called the Biodex, then sitting, standing, jumping, ect. He was asking to do all kinds of crazy things....and each exercise was done 3 or 4 times! This was a huge task, especially for a 10 year old.
The team was very proud of him and were so impressed with how well he's done! He was their first participant and they loved him!
He will do this 3 times in the next year! It's a huge committment, but he did it like a champ!
